Dear Black People..

I want to extend my deepest condolences on behalf of the recent killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd. We must say their names, know their stories, and ensure it does not happen again.

I've been trying to find words for this post that would jump off of the screen to hug and provide my people with the love they are missing after the few weeks we have had. While I am aware that this one post will not and can not heal the immense amount of hurt, I do hope it changes how we see and feel about ourselves in these times.

  1. There is no need to change who I am because I am enough and worthy.
  2. I am learning to advocate for myself effectively.
  3. I give myself permission to feel my feelings. To cry and experience sorrow or to laugh and experience joy.
  4. I will allow myself to change, grow and applaud my progress.
  5. God made no mistakes with me, everything about me embodies God's artwork.
  6. I deserve to be respected and treated fairly.
  7. I will defend my brothers and sisters.
  8. I choose to love myself unconditionally.
  9. I will not conform to the ways of my enemies. I am strong enough to still spread love.
  10. I am strong mentally, physically and emotionally.

I use affirmations to create the reality I wish to see. I wrote these affirmations intending to speak our new truth. They may not feel like the truth at first but there is power in our words and even more power in the actions that follow.

My favorite book says this: "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7
